This Privacy Policy explains how Umutaka ("Umutaka", "we", "us" or "our") collects, uses, discloses and safeguards information when you visit www.umutaka.online (the "Site"), interact with our content, post comments, or contact our editorial team. By using the Site you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information we collect

Information you give us: name and email address if you register a staff account or send us a message; the text of any comment, tip or correction you submit; and the email address you provide for newsletters.

Information collected automatically: IP address, approximate location (country/city derived from IP), device type, browser type and version, operating system, referring URL, pages visited, time on page, scroll depth, clicks on links and ads, and timestamps. This data is used to operate the Site, secure it against abuse, and measure audience engagement.

2. How we use information

To deliver, maintain and improve the Site and its content.
To authenticate staff accounts and protect the Site against fraud, spam and abuse.

3. Legal bases (GDPR / Rwanda Law No. 058/2021)

We process personal data on the basis of your consent (cookies, advertising, newsletters), our legitimate interests (security, basic analytics, fraud prevention), the performance of a contract (staff accounts), and where required to comply with a legal obligation.

4. Advertising & Google AdSense

Umutaka uses Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-5056852337083361) to display ads. Google and its certified partners may use cookies, web beacons and device identifiers to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to our sites and/or other sites on the internet. You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or by visiting www.aboutads.info. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website. Ads served by Google may be controlled using NAI opt-out at optout.networkadvertising.org.

5. Cookie consent

We do not load Google AdSense personalised advertising, Google Analytics or any non-essential third-party scripts until you accept cookies via the consent banner. If you choose "Reject", only strictly necessary cookies (session, language, consent state) are used.

6. Data sharing

We do not sell personal data. We share limited data with the following categories of service providers under contractual data-protection obligations: hosting and content-delivery (Vercel, Cloudflare), database and authentication (Supabase / Lovable Cloud), analytics (Google Analytics where enabled), and advertising (Google AdSense). We may also disclose information when required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Umutaka, our users, or the public.

7. International transfers

Some of our service providers are located outside Rwanda (notably in the European Union and the United States). Where data is transferred internationally we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent safeguards.

8. Data retention

Comments and account data are retained for as long as the account is active or as needed to provide the service. Server logs are retained for up to 90 days. Analytics data is retained for up to 26 months. You may request earlier deletion by writing to nshutidieudonne66@gmail.com.

9. Your rights

You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. Send requests to nshutidieudonne66@gmail.com. You may also lodge a complaint with the National Cyber Security Authority (NCSA) of Rwanda or, for EU residents, your local Data Protection Authority.

10. Security

We use TLS encryption in transit, role-based access controls, row-level security on the database, and routine security reviews. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Children

The Site is intended for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be flagged at the top of this page. Continued use of the Site after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
