About Umutaka

Umutaka is an independent, digital-first news organisation based in Kigali, Rwanda. We publish accurate, balanced and timely reporting in three languages — Kinyarwanda, English and French — so that readers across Rwanda, East Africa and the diaspora can follow the stories that shape their lives.

Who we are

Umutaka was founded in 2026 by a small team of Rwandan journalists, editors and engineers who believed local readers deserved fast, mobile-friendly news in their own language — without sacrificing depth or accuracy. The platform is owned and operated by its founding team and is editorially independent of any political party, government body or single advertiser.

What we cover

  • News — Politics, governance and current affairs in Rwanda and the wider region.
  • Sports — Football, basketball, cycling, athletics and the Rwandan teams that play them.
  • Entertainment — Music, film, festivals and creative culture from Kigali to Kinshasa.
  • Technology — Startups, telecom, fintech, AI and the digital transformation of East Africa.
  • Social Media — What's trending, why it matters, and how to read it critically.
  • Trendings — The stories everyone is talking about today.

How we work

Every story published on Umutaka is written by a named author, fact-checked against primary sources, and reviewed by an editor before it appears. We attribute information to its source, link to original documents wherever possible, and clearly mark opinion and analysis as such. When we make a mistake, we issue a visible correction with the date and what was changed — see our Editorial Policy for full details.

Our values

  • Accuracy first. Speed never comes at the expense of facts.
  • Fairness. We seek comment from anyone we report on and present multiple sides of contested stories.
  • Independence. Editorial decisions are made by editors, not advertisers.
  • Service to readers. We write in plain language and design for the phones our readers actually use.

Funding and advertising

Umutaka is funded by display advertising (primarily Google AdSense), direct sponsorships, and reader support. Advertising is clearly labelled and never influences editorial coverage. Sponsored content, where it appears, is disclosed at the top of the article.

The team

The newsroom is led by founding editor Nshuti Dieudonné, with a rotating roster of staff reporters and freelance contributors across Rwanda. To join us as a writer or to pitch a freelance story, email nshutidieudonne66@gmail.com.
